The survey also revealed that people who were older, over the age of 65, were more likely to know that Medicare provided some aid. However, 53 percent stated that they did not know if Medicare or Medicaid covered health related equipment for the home.

What’s New with the Medicare Plan for Elder Care, Northern VA?

Medical Pros On-Call is a leading Northern VA Elder Care provider that helps its patients live full, dignified and independent lives. When you or a family member faces a disability, getting homecare support early has been shown to create a healthier, more sustainable, caregiving situation for both the care recipient and the family caregivers. There are many questions about home care and senior care, of which one of the biggest is concerns about Medicare. This article will explain Medicare and what is going on with any changes.

Once a dream of Harry Truman in 1945, Medicare eventually came into existence under the watch of Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965 as a way to provide medical insurance for Social Security recipients. Over the years, the Medicare plan has become one of the most popular government programs in history but has also grown in both scope and costs.

Under the administration of President Barack Obama, the Medicare program is undergoing significant changes designed at not only reigning in costs, but more importantly providing improved services to those with a Medicare plan. Among the most notable of those changes is the closing of the gap in coverage involved in Medicare Part D – commonly known as the “Donut Hole”. For patients struggling with the coverage gap, they will receive a 50% discount on prescription drugs once they have reached that gap. In addition, over the next decade, Medicare patients will continue to receive other discounts until the gap is closed.

For patients with the Medicare Advantage plan, the new laws will reduce and eventually eliminate overpayments to insurance companies. In the years since the program was first enacted, Medicare now pays insurance companies on average $1,000 more per patient than in 1965. Moreover beginning in 2014, the law requires that at least 85 cents of every dollar spent must be put toward health care rather than administrative costs.

One constant with your Medicare plan under the new regulations is that you will still be able to choose your own doctor. However, the law provides for more training opportunities and financial assistance for medical students which will hopefully lead to larger numbers of doctors, nurses and physician’s assistants – meaning more availability to medical services for patients. The provisions also strengthen community health centers and their medical staffs, allowing them to treat more patients and treat them more efficiently.

The improvements to the Medicare plan will also provide added protections for nursing home residents who may be victims of neglect or elder abuse. In addition, it creates a new voluntary insurance program aimed at helping patients afford long-term care or at-home care. For people who retire before the age of 65, the new Medicare plan has an option that can offset the costs of many retiree health plans.

Through many of the changes enacted in the new law, your Medicare plan will become more cost-effective in the years to come and will strengthen the program overall. A recent report projected that by 2084, Medicare costs will represent 6.4 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product. While that may sound like a lot, compare it to the projections that Medicare spending would make up more than 11 percent of the country’s GDP without the new provisions that were enacted. Additionally, Part A of the Medicare plan is now expected to be able to pay all benefits on time until 2029, which is 12 years longer than previously projected.

For some patients, there will be little ostensible change in their Medicare plan. But with the new adjustments signed into law, the program hopes to be stronger and more cost-efficient, providing better care for all of its patients. An elder care Northern VA service like Med Pros could help to not only understand these programs, but also to potentially assist your family through this hard time.

What Agencies Provide Fairfax, VA Home Health Care Services?

Home Care Fairfax VA: Aging is an undeniable part of life. But as we get older, we would like to hope that we can spend our senior years in our own homes close to friends and family. Yet in order for that to happen, it is likely that we will need some sort of home health care services. Generally with any type of home health care service, the patient will have access to care around the clock. Depending on the type of care, you can expect either an individual or a team of professionals caring for your loved one. When you begin to look for home health care services, be aware that there are different types of agencies that can serve your needs.

Home Health Agencies, such as Medical Professionals On-Call in Northern VA, are Medicare-certified organizations that are must meet certain federal government standards for patient care. The exact type of care you may receive from a Home Health Agency depends on the agency itself. Some offer a wide variety of services, while others limit themselves to nursing. Regardless of what home health care services they offer, all Home Health Agencies are highly supervised and assume all liability for the care they provide.

Hospice care provides a wide range of services aimed at terminally ill patients. In hospice, care is based mostly in the home, allowing the family to remain by the patient’s side. It involves not only medical care, but psychological and spiritual care as well. In most cases, hospice is provided by a team of professionals whose main job is to keep the patient comfortable and in a little pain as possible.

Home Care Aides, also known as homemakers or chore workers help with many personal care issues like bathing, dressing, preparing meals and housekeeping. The workers generally are recruited and provided by an agency who assumes responsibility for the care. In some states, the Home Care Aide or their agency is expected to be licensed and meet a set standard.

Some home health care patients may require the services of pharmaceutical and infusion therapy companies. These agencies deliver drugs and equipment for patients receiving intravenous drug therapies. Each company usually hires pharmacists who prepare the solutions that will be delivered, while nurses are present to instruct the patient and their care providers how to administer the drugs.

Similarly, there are medical equipment and supply dealers who provide products such as respirators, wheelchairs and walkers to patients. Like a pharmaceutical company, a medical equipment company will generally provide a nurse or other professional who can instruct a patient or other caregiver the proper way to use the equipment.

Support from a Home Care Northern VA professional can provide the back-up that you need with the professional support that helps ensure that disabled people can remain in their homes long-term.

Understanding Your Medicare Benefits

We provide Northern VA in-home care to enrich the lives of our clients, and the peace of mind of their families, to maintain and enhance the maximum possible degree of independent living. We want this process to be as easy as possible, and here are some answers to tough questions about Medicare.

For a number of seniors, Medicare benefits are an important and extremely necessary part of their health care coverage. However as the program has expanded since its creation in 1965, it has in places become more complicated. In order to receive the best possible care, it’s important to understand what type of coverage you have and know what it covers. Medicare is broken down into four parts (A, B, C and D) with each part working a little bit differently.

Part A

Medicare Part A deals with hospital insurance. If you or a spouse paid Medicare taxes while you were working then you do not have to pay a monthly premium. However if you do not qualify for the premium-free portion of Part A, you can still purchase insurance under one of two conditions. You must both be 65 or older, eligible for Part B and be a U.S. citizen or legal resident. The other option is that you are under 65 and have lost your premium-free coverage because you have returned to work. For most Medicare recipients, if you voluntarily buy Part A, you must also buy Part B and pay monthly premiums for both.

If you are on Medicare Part A, the program covers inpatient care in a hospital or a religious, non-medical health care institution. It also covers inpatient care in a skilled nursing facility, excluding long-term or custodial care. Your coverage also includes hospice and home health care services.

Part B

Part B of Medicare handles things like doctors’ services, outpatient care and home health services. It also covers some preventative services. If you are disabled or receiving Social Security, you may automatically be enrolled in that portion of the program. If you do not fall into that category, you may be forced to pay a late enrollment fee provided you do not sign up when you are first eligible at age 65.

Regardless of how you are enrolled into the program, you must pay a premium every month. Most Medicare patients will pay the standard monthly premium (approximately $110 per month), but some may pay slightly more depending on the income they reported in past tax returns.

Part C

Medicare Advantage plans, also known as Part C, are offered by Medicare-approved private companies. The plans usually combine the coverage from Parts A and B. Some plans may also offer additional coverage, such as dental or vision. Many plans also include prescription drug coverage.

While each company must abide by certain guidelines set forth by Medicare, but there may be differences in out-of-pocket costs as well as how you receive medical services. Before signing up for a Medicare Advantage plan, be sure to research what your costs will be and what services you will be eligible for.

Part D

Medicare Part D deals with prescription drug coverage. Any patient with a Medicare plan is eligible for Part D. There are two types of plans that offer drug coverage – Medicare Prescription Drug Plans, which are add-ons to other basic Medicare plans; or Medicare Advantage plans.

It is important to note that in order to receive Medicare drug coverage; you must have either Part A or Part B. Or if you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you must have both Part A and B.
