What Are Your Personal Priorities as a Family Caregiver?
Do you already know what your personal priorities are as a family caregiver? You might think that your only priorities involve caring for your aging adult, but that’s one-dimensional and can get you into trouble quickly. Take some time to sort out what you value in your life and what your priorities are beyond caregiving.
Caring for Your Aging Adult
As a family caregiver, caring for your aging family member is likely high on your list of priorities. This can’t be your only priority, though. Too many family caregivers try to make caregiving the only thing that they focus on and that often means that other areas of their lives suffer greatly.
Caring for Yourself
If you aren’t high on your own priority list, you’re not going to last long as a caregiver. This might sound harsh, but it’s true. Caregiving is extremely demanding, both physically and emotionally. If you’re not able to manage those effects on yourself through properly caring for your own needs, you’re going to fall apart. You absolutely must be eating right, exercising, and paying attention to your own health.
Your Career
Having a career is completely possible as a family caregiver. You may not advance as quickly as you might want, but with the help of other family members and home care providers, you can certainly keep your career high on your personal priority list. Remember that after your caregiving journey is done, you still have your own life to live.
Your Personal Life
Many family caregivers neglect their personal lives while caregiving. They often believe that maintaining their social relationships is selfish when their elderly family member needs so much time and attention. The reality is that humans are social creatures and you need to place your friends and family high on your priority list. Your personal life also includes hobbies and other activities that you enjoy and that give you a sense of purpose.
The more that you understand what is important to you in your life, the more that you can tailor your life and your experiences to support those priorities. It’s possible, even as a family caregiver.
